Workshop The Chair as a Portrait

Vincent van Gogh used expressive colours and swirling brushwork to capture the essence of his subject on canvas. One example is the ‘chair portrait’ he created of his artist friend Paul Gauguin: a chair with several items on it that symbolise the character of the painter.

In this workshop, you will create a portrait of yourself or someone you know in the same way – with a chair and some small (personal) items. You and the other participants will first view a selection of Van Gogh’s paintings in the museum collection, in which symbolism plays a role, before setting to work in the studio.

Workshop Expressive Still Lifes

Sunflowers is probably one of the best-known still lifes ever painted. It is unmistakably by Vincent van Gogh. But what exactly is Van Gogh’s characteristic style? And how is this expressed in his other still lifes?

In the Expressive Still Lifes workshop you'll discover how to use expressive colours and dynamic brushstrokes to put a still life on canvas. After a short tour in the museum where you will look at Van Gogh’s still lifes, you will choose what you will work on. Will you paint your version of the Sunflowers, a fruit still life, or a pair of worn-out shoes, just like Vincent did?

Workshop Nocturnes

Whistler’s work is tranquil and refined. This certainly applies to his ‘nocturnes’ (night landscapes), which he painted layer upon layer in moody colours. You will be making nocturnes just like Whistler.

Just like him, you will try to find the boundary between figuration and abstraction. What details can you leave out? How do you get maximum effect with as few colours as possible?

Workshop Nature in Detail

Vincent van Gogh was second to none when it came to portraying the vibe of the landscapes in his paintings. You can almost feel the dryness and heat in The Harvest. Van Gogh combined the azure blue of the sky with yellow and green tones for the land to capture the atmosphere of the summer’s day.

If you could step into the painting, where would you stand and which details would you paint? After a short guided tour, you'll get hands-on in the studio and discover how to use colour, composition, and brushwork to capture emotion in a landscape, just like Vincent.

Workshop Impressionist Painting

The Impressionists were the (art) rebels of their time. In a revolutionary style – using bright colours and loose brushwork – they captured their impressions of the world around them.

In this workshop, you’ll paint your own contemporary subject: a cityscape or a still life. What is it like to capture a fleeting moment on your canvas? Will you dare to leave your painting ‘unfinished’?

During the workshops, you'll first explore a selection of works in the permanent collection, before setting to work in the studio.
