Van Gogh's Sunflowers

Vincent van Gogh painted a total of five large canvases of sunflowers in a vase, using three shades of yellow ‘and nothing else’. Thus, he showed it was possible to create a picture with many variations of a single colour without losing expressiveness.

The Sunflower paintings are among Van Gogh’s most famous artworks. He painted these in Arles, Southern France, in 1888 and 1889. Sunflowers were especially meaningful to Vincent: he saw them as symbols of inspiration, friendship and gratitude.

Takii x Van Gogh Museum

The Sunflower Flash Amsterdam was created in collaboration with our partner Takii. This company has been a partner of the Van Gogh Museum since 2015.

A seed improvement specialist, Takii was inspired by Van Gogh for the development of its Sunrich: Van Gogh’s Favourite sunflowers, which are used in the Sunflower Flash. Growers worldwide use Takii’s sunflower seeds, so you can enjoy Van Gogh’s beloved flower at home.
