  • New Entrance Hall Opened in 2015
Transparent building

A long-cherished dream of the Van Gogh Museum was fulfilled with the completion of a new main entrance on Museumplein. Featuring advanced glass building techniques, the new entrance is completely transparent.

Additional space

The entrance hall creates an additional 800 m2 of surface area, meaning the museum is better equipped to welcome the growing number of visitors. The additional space also means the museum is able to host larger conferences and receptions.

Architects

The new entrance was designed by Kisho Kurokawa Architect & Associates, the firm founded by the late renowned Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. This firm also designed the museum’s exhibition wing, which was commissioned in 1999, to which the new entrance hall is attached.

Dutch firm Hans van Heeswijk Architects further elaborated the initial designs of Kisho Kurokawa Architect & Associates. The Government Buildings Agency, the owner of the museum building, oversaw the building of the new entrance.

Funding

The Van Gogh Museum has largely financed this project itself. The total cost of €20 million has been raised by drawing on the museum’s own resources and the generous support of individuals, funds, foundations, government agencies and companies.
