Vive l'impressionnisme! Masterpieces from Dutch Collections

From 11 October 2024 to 26 January 2025

To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Impressionism, the Van Gogh Museum is presenting a major autumn retrospective of French masterpieces from Dutch collections. Discover the work of celebrated Impressionists from Claude Monet and Edgar Degas to Auguste Rodin and Camille Pissarro.

'From an early age, I was swept away by the magic of the Impressionists and their vision of themselves as “painters of modern life”. They achieved this by turning their gaze towards the privileged lives led by their own class: the prosperous citizens who made modern Paris and the surrounding countryside their own – a playground for grown-ups.'

'We see them promenading in natural settings and on the boulevards of what was then the world’s capital, dressed in the latest fashions as they while away their newly acquired leisure time. These artists capture the sparkle of all of these phenomena, something that was unheard of at the time.'

For Vincent's Eyes Only. Tekeningen van Emile Bernard

From 26 September 2024 to 12 January 2025

This intimate exhibition features 27 drawings by Emile Bernard, sent to Vincent van Gogh and intended for Vincent’s eyes only. The subjects of the drawings illustrate the discussions that took place between the two friends.

They deal with prostitution in Paris as a subject for a modern art determined to depict all aspects of urban life – including its rough edges, peasant life in Brittany, religion, and acute observation of reality versus flights of the imagination.

An English-language online catalogue devoted to Vincent van Gogh’s contemporaries was published recently. The publication includes in-depth scholarly articles about the drawings and paintings of Emile Bernard featured in this small-scale exhibition.

Anselm Kiefer. Sag mir wo die Blumen sind

From 7 March 2025 to 9 June 2025

For the first time in their history, the Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam are joining forces to stage a major exhibition that centres on one of the most important artists of our time: Anselm Kiefer.

‘Anselm Kiefer has been engaged with Van Gogh’s work from his early years. Sometimes the inspiration is almost literal, as in the case of La Berceuse (for Van Gogh) in the use of sunflowers and the reference to Augustine Roulin, the woman rocking the cradle. His recent work – displayed here for the first time – shows how Van Gogh continues to make his mark on Kiefer’s work today.’

Amsterdam Dance Event: Eefje de Visser (unplugged)

16 October 2024, from 20.00 to 23.00

During the opening of Amsterdam Dance Event, the Van Gogh Museum is hosting a one-off performance by a special artist. Eefje de Visser performed at the museum in 2014 with her acoustic album Het Is. Ten years on, she returns with what promises to be a stunning performance. In the museum’s glass atrium, Eefje will strip away the layers of electronics to treat the audience to a completely unplugged 50-minute performance. Accompanied by guitar, piano and backing vocals, she will play a selection of her songs in their purest form.

This event is sold-out
